Where is my Snoopy Dance?

Alarm clocks, hurry, hurry, don’t be late, brush your teeth, where is your backpack, get in the car NOW, do your homework, soccer, ballet, Girl Scouts, gymnastics, get in bed, turn out the light!

I’m not ready for it.  Any of it.
Yes, you are on the right blog, so don’t bother checking the URL.  I know, this doesn’t sound like me, does it?  I used to be the one counting down the days until school and doing the Snoopy dance in the parking lot at drop off.
Maybe it’s because we’ve had a great summer.  Maybe it’s because we’ve gone on some fantastic family trips.  Nothing major, just little jaunts around Texas.  Maybe it’s the fact that with each year that passes, time seems to fly faster.  No matter how hard I try to capture it and slow it down, it doesn’t obey.
I keep reminding myself that Big Sister will be in Second Grade.  And Baby Boy is about to be two and start “school” this year two days a week.
Where is my Snoopy dance?
I ain’t feelin’ it.
Yes, I will actually have uninterrupted time to do my work, take better care of the house, write my blog and shop for groceries without someone chomping on oranges through the mesh bag.  I may actually get to take a shower without a little person ripping back the curtain and laughing at me.  Not really so funny.  I can go out for a nice, quiet lunch with a friend or my husband without asking for a Kid’s Menu.
I may even find time to exercise.  If I run out of excuses, that is.
Where is my Snoopy dance?
I may have left it in a fictional post I wrote this summer that really changed the way I think about spending time with my family.  The start of another school year just takes me one step closer to being that old lady in the chair whose children don’t need her anymore.
Therefore, in honor of this inevitable truth, I promise to make each day of the new school year count.
I pledge to try my best to live in the moment and take each day as it comes, good or not so good.  I promise to keep my head in the game and not look for the finish line.  Especially since this isn’t a race.
Where is my Snoopy dance?
I know it’s in there somewhere.  I promise to find it by the start of school next week.  I know some of you are counting on me.

I won’t let you down.

  1. Oh I am right there with you. Trying not to sink into depression as the year winds up again and I know I will have less time with them... I will miss these summer days of nothing to do but whatever we want to do...

    1. I know, it's nice to not have to be anywhere at a certain time. Except Tookie's, of course, which is fine by me!! :)

  2. Beautiful, touching post. Thanks for pouring your heart out.

  3. I so relate!

I think I'll find that dance once they are actually in school but for now- I'm not ready.
